RESCUE RADIO PRODUCT ALERT: WEATHER RADIO RECALL

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Oregon
Scientific Inc., has announced a voluntary recall of approximately
66,000 weather radio receivers distributed by Oregon Scientific. This,
after it was been determined that these radios could fail to receive
National Weather Service alert signals in certain areas of the country.

Only four models are affected. They were sold at retail stores
nationwide, including some electronics and sporting goods stores,
online retailers and in catalogs from December 2005 through June 2007
for between $30 and $150. The CPSC says that in the event of severe
weather, this failure could put a consumer's life and property at risk.

For additional information on which models are covered in the recall,
contact Oregon Scientific at (800) 203-4921 Monday through Friday
between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Coast Time . Or you can visit the
firm's website.

Michigan Hams Activated Due to Storms and Tornado

On Friday, August 24 at 5:15 PM (EDT), the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Genesee County. This storm produced two tornados in the mid-Michigan area that caused severe damage to several towns. The greatest damage occurred in the City of Fenton located just south of Flint. The NWS confirmed that an EF2 tornado had touched down and had torn a path 26 miles long and up to 0.5 miles wide through Livingston, Oakland, Genesee and Lapeer County, damaging at least 250 homes and businesses. An EF2 tornado, using the enhanced Fujita scale, is a wind estimate of 110-135 MPH in a three-second gust. More than 12,000 people lost power due to the storms

Web page updates

Hey all,

As you might have just noticed or maybe not but I have done a major update to the web page menu and links section on the site. Also the Blog RSS feed is also on the weather summary page for a total site coverage. The left side menu bar will be updated most likely this weekend due to the time it will take to up the all the pages to keep the formatting the same on each page.

  1. The old links have been replaced with the Weather Summary page.
  2. A website media player has been installed to play the NWS weather radio as a stream on the website. Also to prevent the abuse of the bandwidth the stream will reset every fifteen minutes.
  3. The ETSkywarn blog is now being displayed on the page now also, so anything added to the blog will be automatically update on the website.
  4. A new link to the web mail has been installed that will open in a pop up window so you can keep listening or viewing other things on the site at the same time.

I am also playing with the RSS feed from the National Weather Service on the main page to display current data from McGhee Tyson airport. The RSS feeder from RSSinclude seemed to work better as far as the last updated time seemed to be more realistic... but I am going to give this new one a few days to see what it does.

NWS Weather Radio now streaming online on ETSkywarn.org

Hello all,

Thanks to Chris KI4UHK, who is the webmaster for Claiborne County ARES, for the National Weather Service audio stream from the 162.450 Weather Radio site. The National Weather Service stream will be on 24 hours a day and is available to anyone with internet access.

We are currently looking for someone who can stream the National Weather Service 162.475 transmitter also. I have tried to stream it but once I start transmitting or doing a weather net the audio is distorted. If anyone as a cable connection and a weather radio we can get you the software to use to create the NWS audio stream.

Thanks, Moe N4CQW

Not Available To Help

Hello all,

Just wanted to touch base with everyone to make sure you know to contact Chuck K4KKH starting Sunday July 8th till at least Wednesday 11th of next week.

We are having to travel to Lexington Kentucky to have some possible surgery for our son Joshua. Just depends on what the orthopedic doctor / surgeon decides what will be the best course of action.

Chuck can be reached via the contact page on the Contact Page web site. Chuck can handle any needs that you might have if a weather event occurs that requires net(s) activation.

Nebraska Storms Weather Plug In

In case no one has noticed the upgrades to Nebraska Storms weather warning site, it will be worth your time to look at.

Brian the site owner and very active designer has created IMHO the best weather warning site plug in that I can find. The gang at swift have a nice plug in but the filters don't seem to work to filter the area down to something more manageable than the entire USA. The NBS site works great for filtering plus unlike the swift pages actually open up to something the shows the correct information. Plus it gives you a graphical representation of the weather warning area on a Google Earth Map.... this is a slick system he has up and working.

Thanks for looking I know Brian will appreciate it.
